Cars and Trucks and Things That Go

Ma and Pa and Pickles and

Penny Pig are going on a picnic.

Here comes Ma with the

picnic basket.

Please hurry up, Ma.

What’s the Story?

The Pig family is going to the beach to have their picnic so they get in their car and head out.

Along the way they encounter every kind of car imaginable, from station wagons, to tow trucks, to bulldozers, to the broom-o-cycle. There’s even a car made out of a pickle.

It’s one riotous misadventure after another all the way to the beach (and back again).

Will Officer Flossy catch that dastardly Dingo Dog? Will Rollo Rabbit catch his runaway steamroller? And how exactly does Mistress Mouse tow away all those broken-down automobiles with her miniature-sized tow truck?

Why is it Great?

My wife says this book should come with a warning: “Your kids will love this book. You will too—for the first 100 times you read it, that is.” After that, good luck.

This book is both amazing and awful at the same time. It’s about seventy pages, each page absolutely packed with detailed illustrations of every car and truck and thing that goes imaginable. It takes forever to read from cover to cover, especially when your child wants to stop and examine every picture. I suggest treating it like a chapter book and breaking it up over multiple read-aloud sessions.

My kids want to read it again and again. But I can’t blame them. This book is made to be read on repeat as there’s always more to discover. From searching for the elusive Goldbug hiding on every page, to the unsung hero of Mistress Mouse and her tiny tow truck to the rescue, there’s always something new to find on each page whether it’s your first time reading or your tenth.
