What’s the Story?
In Hubert’s Hair Raising Adventure, a Hubert the lion’s mane goes up in smoke. For a lion as vain as Hubert nothing could be worse!
The animals of the African savannah gather to see what all the fuss is about – and to offer their own solutions. The elephant remembers a cure. Unfortunately, it involves crocodile tears and no one is brave enough to collect them except the clever elephant. The elephant succeeds in his daring adventure but the tonic works a little too well.

Why is it Great?
Hubert’s Hair Raising Adventure by Bill Peet was first published in 1959.
In addition to being an author-illustrator of many children’s books, Bill Peet was an artist for Walt Disney and participated in classic films like Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians. He brings his signature style to his menagerie of characters in Hubert’s Hair Raising Adventure. The illustrations are expressive and fun. The story is not only humorous but also imparts important life lessons.
My kids love this story and I never tire of reading it aloud. It’s definitely a classic worthy of anyone’s collection.
